Spreaders that are calibrated incorrectly, that have a stuck flow rate, or that get pushed too slowly across the lawn all deliver more product per square foot than the label intends. Liquid sprayers can do the same when nozzles drip or pressure spikes during application.

If your yellow pattern looks like rows or stripes, that is fertilizer burn. The fix is to water the lawn deeply for several days to flush the excess nitrogen out of the root zone. About half an inch of water daily for 5 to 7 days is usually enough to dilute and move the excess product. Severely burned spots may need overseeding once the soil chemistry is back in range.

Cause 2: Salt Accumulation

Some fertilizers, especially low-quality consumer products, have high salt indexes.
