Is Lawn Care Safe for Pets? What Oklahoma Pet Owners Need to Know

Professional lawn care products, when applied correctly and allowed to dry completely, are generally safe for pets. Most treatments dry within 1-2 hours depending on weather conditions. Once dry, your pets can resume normal outdoor activity. Complete Lawn Care uses EPA-registered products specifically designed for residential lawns where families and pets live, and we always communicate specific instructions after each service.

We get it. Your dog isn’t just a pet; they’re family. At Complete Lawn Care, many of us have pets too, and we treat your lawn the same way we’d treat our own. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your furry family members safe while maintaining a beautiful lawn.

The Short Answer: How Long Should Pets Stay Off Treated Lawns?

Wait until the application has completely dried before letting pets back on the lawn. In most conditions, this takes 1-2 hours. On humid days or if you have irrigation scheduled, it may take longer.

How to tell if it’s dry: Walk across the lawn and check your shoes. If they’re dry with no visible residue, the application has dried sufficiently. You can also touch the grass blades. They should feel dry, not wet or tacky.

When in doubt, wait longer. There’s no harm in keeping pets inside an extra hour or two to be safe. Complete Lawn Care technicians will let you know if any specific application requires extended drying time.

What Products Does Complete Lawn Care Use?

All products used by Complete Lawn Care are EPA-registered for residential use. This means they’ve been tested and approved for use on lawns where families and pets spend time. We select products based on effectiveness AND safety profile.

Fertilizers: Fertilizers are generally low-risk once dried. The main concern is if a pet eats a significant amount of granular fertilizer before it dissolves, which can cause stomach upset. This is another reason to keep pets off the lawn until products have been watered in or have dissolved.

Weed Control: Herbicides need to be absorbed by weeds to work, which is why we ask you to wait before watering. Once dry, the product has been absorbed by plant material and poses minimal risk to pets walking on the lawn.

Pest Control: Insecticides and grub control products are applied at rates specifically calibrated for turf pests, not mammals. Once dried, these products bind to soil and plant material rather than remaining on the surface.

Best Practices for Pet-Owning Households

• Know your service schedule: Mark treatment days on your calendar so you can plan to keep pets inside during application and drying time.

• Keep pets inside during application: Even if products are pet-safe when dry, it’s best for pets (and technicians) if your furry friends are inside during actual treatment.

• Wait for complete drying: 1-2 hours minimum, longer on humid or overcast days

• Wipe paws after first outing: After the first time back on a treated lawn, wipe your pet’s paws with a damp cloth as an extra precaution.

• Store any DIY products safely: If you do any supplemental lawn care yourself, store products where pets can’t access them.

• Watch for unusual behavior: If your pet shows signs of illness after lawn treatment (vomiting, excessive drooling, lethargy), contact your vet.

Common Pet Owner Concerns (Answered Honestly)

“My dog eats grass. Is that safe after treatment?”

Once applications have dried and been watered in (either by rain or irrigation), grass-eating poses minimal risk. However, if your dog is a dedicated grass-eater, you may want to wait until after the first watering following treatment. If you’re concerned, keep your dog on a leash for bathroom breaks for 24-48 hours so you can redirect any grass-eating attempts.

“What about my dog rolling in the grass?”

Once dry, products have been absorbed and aren’t transferring significantly to fur. Your grass-rolling enthusiast can resume normal operations after the 1-2 hour drying period. A bath afterward isn’t necessary but won’t hurt if it makes you feel better.

“Are treatments safe for puppies or senior dogs?”

The same guidelines apply, though you may want to extend waiting time for very young puppies or dogs with health conditions. When in doubt, consult your veterinarian about your specific pet’s situation.

“What about cats?”

The same rules apply. Indoor cats with outdoor access should be kept inside during application and drying time. Cats are generally more cautious about what they ingest than dogs, but the precautions are the same.

What About Kids?

The same principles apply to children. Keep kids off treated areas until applications have fully dried (1-2 hours). Once dry, normal play can resume. For crawling babies or toddlers who put everything in their mouths, you may want to wait until after the first watering/rain as an extra precaution.

Complete Lawn Care uses products registered for residential use specifically because we know families with children and pets live on the lawns we treat. We take that responsibility seriously.
